The microlensing rate and mass function vs. dynamics of the Galactic bar

چکیده

With the steady increase of the sample size of observed microlenses towards the central regions of the Galaxy, the main source of the uncertainty in the lens mass will shift from the simple Poisson noise to the intrinsic non-uniqueness of our dynamical models of the inner Galaxy, particularly, the Galactic bar. We use a set of simple self-consistent bar models to investigate how the microlensing event rate varies as a function of axis ratio, bar angle and velocity distribution. The non-uniqueness of the velocity distribution of the bar model adds a significant uncertainty (by about a factor of 1.5) to any prediction of the lens mass. Kinematic data and self-consistent models are critical to lift the non-uniqueness. We discuss the implications of these results for the interpretation of microlensing observations of the Galactic bulge. In particular we show that Freeman bar models scaled to the mass of the Galactic bulge/bar imply a typical lens mass of around 0.8M⊙, a factor of 3-5 times larger than the value from other models.

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

On Microlensing Event Rates and Optical Depth toward the Galactic Center

The dependence of microlensing time scale frequency distributions and optical depth toward the galactic center on galactic model parameters is explored in detail for a distribution of stars consisting of the Zhao (1996) bar and nucleus and the Bahcall and Soneira (1980) double exponential disk. The high sensitivity of these two microlensing measures to the circular velocity model, velocity disp...

On the Microlensing Optical Depth of the Galactic Bar

The microlensing probability (optical depth τ) toward the Galactic center carries information about the mass distribution of the Galactic bulge/bar, so can be used to constrain the very uncertain shape parameters of the Galactic bar. In this paper we study a family of bar models with tunable triaxiality, boxyness and radial profile to span the range of plausible density models of the Galactic b...

Are the Ogle Microlenses in the Galactic Bar?

The analysis of the first two years of OGLE data revealed 9 microlensing events of the galactic bulge stars, with the characteristic time scales in the range 8.6 < t0 < 62 days, where t0 = RE/V . The optical depth to microlensing is larger than (3.3 ± 1.2) × 10, in excess of current theoretical estimates, indicating a much higher efficiency for microlensing by either bulge or disk lenses. We ar...

Is Galactic Structure Compatible with Microlensing Data?

We generalize to elliptical models the argument of Kuijken (1997), which connects the microlensing optical depth towards the Galactic bulge to the Galactic rotation curve. When applied to the latest value from the MACHO collaboration for the optical depth for microlensing of clump giants at the Galactic centre, the argument implies that the Galactic bar cannot plausibly reconcile the measured v...
